My Nama Chef: The Jacob Lum Lung Interview

Updated: Nov 5, 2019

Here we have 22 year old Jacob Lum Lung, a senior at Hawaiʻi Pacific University describe his passion and love for filmmaking. He began his pursuit for filmmaking at the young age of 13 during middle school when he got a hand on a camera and began filming arbitrary content with his classmates. He enjoyed his time pressing record and documenting the moments but he decided to take this passion of his to the next level. He continued his journey all the way through high school where he decided to become a film director. The process was quite interesting to him and was beyond just pressing record. He had to understand directing, writing, acting, etc. The whole system of production was absolutely mind blowing to Jacob but he thought that his strengths rely more on Directing. He hopes to use his skills as a director to one day make feature length films. Mainly about Hawaiian based films. He wants to express his heritage through film because he feels that the portrayal of Native Hawaiians arenʻt accurate thus making the general public outside of Hawaiʻi unknown to the true Hawaiian Identity. But he hopes to one day become the first Hawaiian director to win an Oscar with a Hawaiian based film. This may seem like a selfish goal but actually he wishes to give back to Hawaiʻi after giving him so much. He also wants to pay off his families home, his future familyʻs life, buy more land for Natives and much more. He hopes to do so much with the help from his love, filmmaking.
